Recently, while preparing for a fitness-themed shoot with beauty extraordinaire Bethany Brill, we were caught off-guard when the hairstylist mentioned casually that gym hair and wedding hair have become almost one and the same, in recent years. We’re ended up with the best tutorial ever for getting undone hair that still looks well-done, after we asked Brill to explain exactly what she meant.

While wedding hair used to mean thousands of bobby pins and five cans of hairspray but lately, brides want nothing more than to look like themselves, Brill explains. She says that brides have been having major aversions to looking like they tried in the past three years, even though they’re trying their best on that day.

For their big days, brides are choosing from a few barely styled ‘undos’, according to Brill. Brides are going for low chignon with loose pieces in the front or a loose bun on the side. Braids too are very popular and a great one is a disheveled crown braid. According to Brill, brides sometimes even opt for the gym-hair specialty. This simply involves tossing the hair up in a haphazard fashion at the crown of the head.

It’s important to get the right product cocktail to enhance your hair’s natural movement as the bedhead bride look is all about texture. Brill explains that like cooking, it’s a combination of products. Dirty hair has more moisture, if you have dry hair. So, you’d want to add a texture spray or wax and oil at the end. A beach spray will help if your hair is super-smooth. Brill swears by Oribe’s dry styling line, to get beachy texture right. To last the style all day without having to rely on a ton of pins, the idea is to get some good grip into the hair.

On her wedding day, every bride of course wants to look casually incredible and not like for 30 minutes, she just actually hit the elliptical. Brill says that the lightest bit of heat styling is the difference between straight-up sloppitude and casually fancy hair. You want to wind some pieces of hair around a curling iron to create just a hint of bend and slightly structured waves, instead of not touching it with heat. Spending time on getting volume and texture right will ensure that your style become even more gorgeous the more rumpled it get and will last all day.
