Exercise can do almost anything. It helps people sleep better and lose weight and also aids in the prevention of disease and colds. Hitting the gym can also reduce stress as it creates endorphins to uplift moods and energy levels. It would seem that more is better, with all these benefits. But really is that the case?

Experts recommend moderately intense exercise about 30 minutes/day five days a week, to stay healthy. 60 to 90 minutes a day five times a week is the goal, if you’re trying to lose or maintain your weight, and we’re talking calorie-burning cardio and heart-pumping.

With that, it’s not possible always to each week fit in five workouts, so to balance a tight schedule, doubling up in one day is a great way. Make sure they’re different from one another when doing two daily workouts, so that over the course of a day, you can include a balance of cardio, stretching and strength training. So, do some strength training before dinner, hit up that lunchtime spin class or take an evening yoga class and go for a run in the morning. Each time you exercise, be conscious of which muscles you’re targeting because in one day, solely working your legs twice not only cause a pain or injury due to muscular imbalance but also, you’ll get bored. To allow your muscles a chance to heal and strengthen, take it easy at least twice a week as rest days are also important.

Of course you’ll be exceeding the two or three hours of exercise two basic workouts would entail, if you’re training for a race, attending a fitness event, or tackling a daylong snowshoe or hike. Be mindful of pushing yourself too far and pace yourself throughout the day for big fitness bursts like this. Stop immediately to rest if you’re feeling extremely dizzy, lethargic, painfully sore or nauseous and scale down the intensity a bit, next time. It’s good idea to stick to 30 to 90 minutes per session if two regular daily workouts are something you’d like to make a habit of, and make one low intensity cardio and the other higher-intensity.

Also make sure you’re nourishing yourself with enough protein and healthy carbs, as exercising twice in one day will cause you to burn more calories. There’s nothing wrong with sweating it out twice as long as getting in your two workouts doesn’t prevent you from getting enough sleep or have a negative effect on your life.
