A Comeback After Eight Years: Abir Gulaal Marks a New Chapter

Fawad Khan, the celebrated Pakistani actor, is set to re-enter Bollywood after an eight-year break with the upcoming romantic comedy Abir Gulaal. Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi and co-starring Vaani Kapoor, the film is a collaborative production between Indian Stories and A Richer Lens Entertainment. Filming commenced in London in September 2024, and the theatrical release is scheduled for May 9, 2025.

 

Fawad Khan’s Bollywood Journey: From Stardom to Standoff

Khan rose to prominence in Indian cinema with notable roles in Khoobsurat (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). However, escalating political tensions following the 2016 Uri attack led to the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association enforcing a ban on Pakistani talent in Indian productions. This decision effectively halted Fawad’s Bollywood career.

Legal Relief but Political Resistance

In 2023, the Bombay High Court rejected a petition aiming to prohibit all collaboration with Pakistani artists, deeming such restrictions counterproductive to cultural unity and peacebuilding. Despite this, Khan’s return with Abir Gulaal has reignited political backlash. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has publicly opposed the film’s release in Maharashtra due to Khan’s involvement. MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar asserted, “We will not allow this film to release under any circumstance.”

 

Shiv Sena’s Stance and the Demand for Policy Clarity

Further criticism came from Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam, who questioned the success of Pakistani artists in India and emphasized the need for a transparent government policy on cross-border collaborations in the entertainment industry.

 

Fawad Khan Responds with Caution

Addressing the controversy, Fawad Khan acknowledged the sensitive nature of Indo-Pak relations in the entertainment sector. Speaking in a recent interview, he remarked, “Only time and situation will tell,” indicating his awareness of the political and social complexities surrounding his return.

The film Abir Gulaal narrates the story of two strangers who, while dealing with personal grief, inadvertently help each other heal—leading to an unexpected romantic connection. The soundtrack is composed by Amit Trivedi, with lyrics penned by Kumaar, adding emotional depth to the storyline.
