The new exhibition of Victoria & Albert charts much more than the white wedding dresses though it might be entitled Wedding Dresses 1775-2014.
The exhibition tells the story that when the white became important for the first time to be used in high-profile weddings. There are two floors in the exhibition, the gowns in first floor shows the fashion of late eighteenth century and at mezzanine level, you can see the fashion of last fifty years.
The exhibit shows through chronology the evolution of marriages. There are photographs and films of the bride’s gown that they wore along with the line drawing of their marriage buildings. There are other outfits also present that were worn by grooms, bridesmaids and page boys.
For five years, curator Edwina Ehrman worked on this exhibition. Along the way, she acquired many new pieces for the archive of museum and in the extensive collection of wedding fashion, she also filled many gaps. She told that she became much amused by getting pieces from Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale, Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, Katie Shillingford, Dita Von Teese and Mary Charteris. Pam Hogg designed the dress of Mary and she described it as a nice dress and the collaborative take on the wedding dress is good to see.
Ehrman said that the period should be reflected from the dress in which it is worn. The exhibition tries to explore trends of time with this thought, whether it may be the glamour of the Thirties, the drop-waists of the Twenties or it may be the growth of more unconventional and innovative outfits.
