At the New York City Ballet’s fall gala, ballet master in chief Peter Martins announced that he was aware of Carolina for a long time and they always talked about doing something together and now they did that. He was talking about Carolina Herrera who designed the outfit for ‘Morgen’, Martins-choreographed gala opener.
The noted fashion designers of company have five pairing costumes (3 of them ‘world premiers’) and Morgen was the first one and among the dancers and choreographers the co-chair Sarah Jessica Parker was very successful. In fact, Martin during an understatement thanked Parker a lot as he said that she is behind at that fashion idea.
Of the three world premiers, the first one was “Clearing Dawn” by Troy Schumacher in which boyish suiting of Thom Browne was brilliantly used.
In “Funerailles” by Liam Scarlett, the costumes by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen were featured and it was very romantic by considering that Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck were performing for the first time after their marriage in June. ‘Bellet-Lettres’ of Justin Peck welcomed literalness to the title as he closed the program with lace-letter-appliqued costumes of Mary Katrantzou.
Martins called all the designers and choreographers up to the dance floor at the gala dinner in a forest of birches with hanging lanterns in a maze of tables decorated with Delftware. Parker, similar to a proud mother at her child’s game picture, hurried up to take a photo with her smartphone while she was dressed in Mary Katrantzou very thematically.
Browne and Andrew Bolton were sitting around Sarah Jessica Parker at her table while Andy Cohen, her date, was chatting with Lizzie Tisch who was wearing the diamond-print dress of her mother. Tina Craig and Veronica Chou were also present there who arrived from Dallas earlier this week.
At the end of his speech, Martins coyly said that he only forgot to mention the best dancers in the world. After that, the dancers entered the gala with applause from the guests and performed in front of them.
