A few short months after unleashing a colorful riot of “fashion-tainment” onto the masses with his debut Z Spoke runway show, Zac Posen was in a decidedly more serious mood. “Last season was about launching it to the media,” he explained today at a private showroom appointment. “This season, it’s about direct to the consumer and retailer.”

That statement may have a touch of spin, since Z Spoke’s Spring show was deemed over-the-top by some, but there’s no arguing that Posen is in laser-focused selling mode for Fall, with tried-and-true pieces in mostly blacks, inky blues, grays, and a dash of pink. And what’s not to love—for both retailer and customer—about a little black bustier party dress cut in fabric that never wrinkles? For $425, not much at all.

This was a frock-heavy selection, with clingy sweater dresses, daytime shifts in wool and hammered silk, liquid jersey Grecian numbers, and slinky cutout gowns. But a clear effort had been made to include relatively more casual daywear. Heck, there was even a parka. As for the upcoming show for his signature line in Paris, it seems you can expect more of this new restraint. Said Posen, “I think in general with collection and with Z Spoke, we’re moving into a more streamlined identity of my original language.”
