Last week, the Oscar nominations were announced and to find out who’s going to go home with a gold statue, we’re eagerly awaiting the March 02 show. However, we’re highlighting all the first timers and still luxuriating in the news of the nominees. Some might be surprising.
Jared Leto
Ared Leto came back strong with ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ after taking several years away from his acting career. This net him his first Oscar nomination due to his strong acting.
Sally Hawkins
The British actress won a Golden Globe for ‘Happy Go Lucky’ in 2008 but for best supporting actress in ‘Blue Jasmine, this year marks her first Oscar nomination.
Matthew McConaughey
2014 actually marks the first nomination of Matthew McConaughey for ‘best actor’ for ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, who’s an acting veteran. And it could be his first Oscar win too, by the way things are going.
Michael Fassbender
For the last few years, Michael Fassbender has been a critical favorite for his acting ability but actually Fassnender’s first Oscar nomination is due to a nod for best supporting actor.
June Squibb
For Nebraska, June Squibb’s best supporting actress nod is the first nomination for the 84-year-old actress, but she’s not the oldest nominee ever. (87 year old Gloria Stuart)
Chiwetel Ejiofor
With his leading role in ’12 Years a Slave’, Chiwetel Ejiofor impressed the film community and also able to achieve his first Academy Award nomination. ‘Love Actually’ fans have loved him for years though it may be his first shot at the Oscars.
Barkhad Abdi
Barkhad Abdi is also a first-time actor along with his first-time nominee of ‘Best Supporting Actor’. The Somalian-American Abdi was a limo driver and a DJ before his breakout role in ‘Captain Phillips’.
Steve McQueen
This is the first-ever nomination for the director of ’12 Years a Slave’ and he’ll make history as the first black winner of ‘best director’, if he wins.
Lupita Nyong’o
Her breakout role hasn’t just afforded Nyong’o her first Oscar nomination and the ’12 Years a Slave’ star is up for ‘best supporting actress’. Nyong’o has taken award season by storm with her fascinating background, her red carpet style and her fresh perspective.
