In Egypt, laser hair removal has become very popular. It seems to be, everyone is doing it. The difference between Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and LASER is important seeing as here, both are offered.
Laser is a light type with three characteristics that define it as the most powerful, brightest light known to mankind. Laser is 100% one pure-color, i.e. monochromatic. On the other hand, IPL has different colors within the light and in hair removal, only a small percentage of these colors are effective. Laser is also slow to spread out, i.e. collimated, thus making extremely powerful as for hair removal, as all of the light can be used, while nothing that for IPL. When it comes to hair removal, Laser is extremely effective but the light cancels itself out and IPL is not even reinforcing. IPL still has been proven to be quite effective when removing scars caused by sun damage and has a strong place in the market.
The side effects of both IPL and laser are similar to waxing and quite standard, which includes: pink skin, itching, swelling and redness around the treatment area.
The more serious risks are skin discoloration, acne, hypo pigmentation (white spots), burns, infection and scab formation. For some people, these horrible side effects might not be worth the risk. Before you start the hair removal treatment, the risks are reduced by scheduling a consultation with your dermatologist to decide which type of laser would be appropriate for your skin type. Also as beforehand, every doctor will tell you never go in with a tan for a treatment.
To help reduce pain expected during treatments, patients should definitely use numbing creams over large sensitive skin areas by minimum of half an hour before the treatment.
