Cristobal Balenciaga stopped his working as designer and closed his couture house in 1968. After about 30 years of the close of his couture house, a 26-year-old Frenchman Nicolas Ghesquiere opened the couture house and started working as creative director of Balenciaga in 1997 after the leaving of Josephus Thimister.

Ghesquiere had quietly freelanced for Balenciaga’s licences since 1995. Three years later, Ghesquiere was awarded with the Vogue/VHl Avant Garde Designer of the Year Award and after it the CFDA womenswear Designer of the Year title in 2001. Suzy Menkes associated with The International Herald Tribune praised him as the most intriguing and original designer of that generation.

He was unfamiliar when he started working at Balenciaga, but Ghesquiere’s developed his taste towards fashion industry. He had started working at Agnes B. and Corinne Cobson when he was studying at school in Loudon, central France. He was appointed as an assistant designer to Jean Paul Gaultier and then Mugler at the age of 19, before a brief tenure as head designer at Trussardi. But his great development is to reveal the masterpieces of fashion and trend at Balenciaga. The green silk crop combat pants for his spring/summer collection 2002 were copied in large numbers garment of the season and Neoprene mini skirts and clothes for spring/summer collection 2003 moved Balenciaga to the top of the fashion industry by its own creativity and earned a lot.
Gucci Group bought house of Balenciaga and after one year his designed menswear line was exhibited in 2002. He exhibited autumn/winter collection 2005 including A-line leather dresses trimmed with pale ostrich feathers and sleek tailoring fitted with chrome fastenings. Former Gucci CEO Domenico De Sole has exclaimed Nicolas Ghesquiere a fantastic asset given by Balenciaga.
