Sonia Rykiel was known as the ‘Queen of Knits’ and associated with Paris. She was born in Paris in 1930 and introduced Parisian style in her fashion line. She was divorced for the reason that she had no soft and flexible sweaters to wear through her pregnancy. She created her own line of fashion in 1962. She got success in this line of fashion and started her own first boutique in that Parisian year in 1968. Rykiel’s fashion brought revolution and her flattering knits which were become her trademark stripes which were symbolically liberation for ladies bodies from the stiff suiting of the last decades. Her sweaters and clothes became second skins for the ladies who wore these dresses.

Rykiel still carried on building her very own French Empire in the fashion world from the ‘70s. She carried on working on beauty line by exhibiting of perfume in 1978 and then introduced cosmetics in 1987. She ran her business by herself which became her family business. Her husband Simon Bernstein is her business partner and her daughter Nathalie Rykiel is also looking after the company matters since 1975. This support allowed her to do some other tasks.

Now Madame Rykiel is appearing to be a French institution. She wrote novels, decorated hotels, sung duets along with Malcolm McLaren and a rose is also named after her. Rykiel also won the Oscar award by Fashion Group International and she was named Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Merite by the French government in December 2001. There is no signs of end of French fashion shows as she grew to ‘70s. There is a lot of women who loved her sweaters.
