The true incubator of high fashion is the World of Haute Couture, where uncompromising beauty and wild ideas are the order of the day. There are fewer concerns about margins, wearability and production quantities that plague the ready-to-wear market, since each piece is made-to-order by exceptionally wealthy clients.
At the opening show of Paris Haute Couture Week on Sunday evening, how fitting then that Lady Gaga, pop star extraordinaire and couture queen, sat on the front row.
Gaga paid homage to one of her favorite brands at the Atelier Versace show by wearing a gem encrusted hooded, draped and figure hugging black dress. To a compilation of Gaga hits, designer Donatella Versace, the other important petite blonde, sent her models down the runway. In twinkling black, white then icy pale blues, pinks and lilacs broken up with shots of lurid yellow and purple, Grecian goddesses in sensual draped silk jersey.
But this being Versace, these goddesses wore crystal encrusted bodices, thigh-high splits and sequins along with Grace Jones draped hoods and big shoulders attached to dresses and jackets.
With metallic beads, Bustiers were painstakingly sewn and appeared ‘like tattoos on the skin’, crystals in geometric patterns. With sensual drapes that emphasized the neck, hips and shoulders, the Silhouette, the undoubted feminine, was clinched at the waist. Towards low scoop backs and long, semi-transparent full skirts that looked like ‘liquid glass’, slivers of silk jersey would slink.
Donatella wrote that this collection has elegance and control along with provocative attitude. A little saccharine, sensual and princess-y, than her last this year couture collection was definitely more literal. However, it did still have plenty of show stoppers. We can see Lady Gaga definitely in big skirt ensemble and the lilac hooded bandeau top, crystal jumpsuit, the sheer black netted or that blue full and powder pink fox stole.
