From Alexander Wang to Zara, the long vest has been cropping up everywhere, is more like a sleeveless jacket and less like your typical, cropped-to-the-hip waistcoat. We’ll grant that this makes it a little tricky to wear. But to ditch the notion of long-vest-as-outerwear is the key, because a coat with no arms is needed by what sort of bifurcated, weird climate?

As an arresting layering piece, think of the long vest instead. Like the world’s most elegant blazer, Zara’s structured, dove-gray version functions: It magically makes feel creative directory to your even most boring work staples, like trousers and a black turtleneck. Or makes your typical going-out gear feel way less standard of a softer take on the trend, like Vera Wang’s sequined, unstructured vest.
